Strange Happenings at Holt Residence

August 9, 1999

The home of Alexander D. Holt, the suspected serial murderer who recently committed suicide in police custody , received a strange visitor last night. Near 3:00am, two officers patrolling the area reported hearing loud noises inside the house. Officer Michael Neil tells what happened as he and officer William Burton approached the house to investigate.

"After calling for backup, we started running up the driveway. We heard glass breaking, and saw a shadow emerge from one of the west windows and run towards the woods."

Neil described the 'shadow' as some kind of animal.

"Maybe a large dog... although it had a funny shape to it. Especially the head. I couldn't swear it was a dog or anything else... It moved faster than any animal I've seen."

"It was big and fast," added Burton. "Hard to tell what it was from a distance at that speed. It moved like a... hell, I don't know."

An investigation of the house found that several rooms had been vandalized. Among the damaged rooms was Holt's library, which contained a collection of rare books.

"The library was torn to shreds," said Burton. "Like a tornado had been through it. Books everywhere... most of 'em ripped to pieces."

Holt's bedroom was also vandalized, as was the basement where the mutilated body of Bonnie Hand was found three days ago. The rest of the house was completely untouched.

Police did not find any tracks inside or outside the house, nor could they tell how the visitor gained entry.

"The residence was completely sealed by forensics," said Sheriff Cook at a press conference this morning. "Probably tighter than most other crime scenes. There were no signs of trauma to any exterior doors or windows, all of which were locked. Based on the description from the officers, I'd say we were dealing with some kind of wild animal, possibly kept by Holt as a pet inside the house."

When asked why police had not discovered the animal earlier, Cook refused to comment.

Meanwhile, neighbors were asked to make certain that doors and windows locked at night... precautions that most have been taking ever since the discoveries in the Holt residence last week. Alexander Holt was taken into custody this past Friday on suspicion of murder and kidnapping of five Georgia women. The dismembered and cannibalized remains of Bonnie Hand were found in Holt's basement, along with items belonging to Angela Stilton, Saretta Lewis, Jamie Anderson, and Henrietta Bolsom. Each woman had been reported missing in Macon earlier this year. Holt killed himself while in police custody, leaving authorities and neighbors with nothing but questions and a grizzly crime scene. Police speculated that, due to his advanced age, the sixty-seven year old Holt may have had an accomplice, but now it appears that that accomplice may not be human, and may still be at large.
