Tragedy

August 17, 1999
Edward Found

Tragedy struck close to home this morning when Police found the bloodied and abandoned car of OnTarget reporter Wade Covey. Covey's 1997 Nissan was found at 5:15am on Wilstin road, less than two miles away from the Celestial Vision trailer park... scene of one of the last attacks by the mysterious animal that has terrorized this county over the last week. There was no sign of Covey, and police believe that he is yet another victim of the "Henry County Horror."

Wade was covering the dramatic and frightening events that had been unfolding in Henry county since the arrest of Alexander Holt weeks ago. He was one of the few reporters that gave credence to growing sentiment that there was much more to the story than local authorities were saying. Several reporters received phone calls from an anonymous source... supposedly someone with connections to the Sheriff's office... Wade Covey was the only one who reported the allegations of federal involvement and a police cover-up. His death is a serious blow to efforts to get to the truth of what is going on in Henry County.

What we do know is that, on August 6th, police found the dismembered and cannibalized remains of local resident in the basement of Alexander Holt. They also found items connected to four missing persons, Angela Stilton, Saretta Lewis, Jamie Anderson, and Henrietta Bolsom. Holt killed himself while in police custody, although this fact was disputed by an anonymous police source. On August 9th, a large animal destroyed several rooms in the Holt's home before breaking out a window and escaping into the woods

The next morning, sheriff's officers discovered the bloodied and abandoned campsite of Thurmond, Debra, and Leslie-Ann Jenkins. Leslie-Ann was found alive and in shock the next day, but later died without having regained consciousness. On the night of August 12th, three sheriffs officers were killed while stationed at the Holt residence. After responding to reports of gunshots, arriving officers found the dismembered and partially eaten body of officer Danny Evers in the basement. All that remained of officers Rodney Deams and Joe McKinney were large pools of blood, and one severed hand which was still holding a weapon. The weapon had been discharged several times.

Two nights later, Barbara and Steve Holmes were attacked in their trailer-park home. Both are missing and presumed dead. The attack was witnessed by Joe Hambly, who drew a sketch of the creature he saw leaving the Holmes residence. Police have not released the sketch, and Mr. Hambly has not responded to requests for an interview. In fact, no one has seen Mr. Hambly since he left the police station several days ago.

On the heels of this latest supposed attack, Police have urged all citizens not associated with the Sheriff's department to leave the immediate area until the creature could be found and contained. They are not yet enforcing this de-facto evacuation, but many citizens are leaving... headed for nearby towns where they hope to wait out the storm of blood and violence. Reporters are allowed to stay, but movements are heavily restricted.

Teams of hunters continue to enter and leave the woods surrounding the Holt residence and the Celestial Visions trailer park. Police allowed reporters to sit in on a portion of a pre-hunt meeting, where Sheriff Robert Cook informed the hunters that they were looking for a large, non-indigenous animal that was carnivorous and possibly rabid. The hunters, most of which carried military-style weapons and very little camping equipment, seemed unconcerned with the lack of official information, or with the sheer violence of the attacks connected with the animal.

"We've got the best out here," Cook said before returning to his office. "And more coming tomorrow. We'll have this thing wrapped up before the end of the week."

Other police officers looked less than confident, but were under strict orders not to comment or talk to reporters.
